Dear Friend

What do you think when you see a website that starts with “Dear Friend”….written by someone you’ve never met?

Hi my name is John Ryan; I am the author of the e-book: Go-anywhere: A guide to help you beat bashful bladder. I have suffered from Shy Bladder for nearly fifteen years. Although I consider myself to be in recovery rather than being a sufferer; I am proud to say I have not had a Shy Bladder experience for nearly 7 months.

I want to tell you how I did it and how you can too.

IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT SHY BLADDER

Shy Bladder is defined as follows: It is a condition that inhibits the sufferer’s ability to urinate in the presence of people (real or imagined). It is known by many names Bashful Bladder Syndrome, Shy Bladder Syndrome, Pee Shy, Shy Kidneys and Stage Fright. The scientific term is Avoidant Paruresis.

You are not alone: Shy Bladder is thought to affect 7% of the population, with the majority of sufferers being men. So, if nothing else I would like you to remember just one thing from this page: no matter how alone you may feel there are millions of people in the same position as you.

You can treat Shy Bladder: Shy Bladder can and has been treated using the methods you will discover in my e-book. I know at this stage you probably feel it is near on impossible to beat Shy Bladder, but I would just like to tell you that just by simply visiting this website you have already begun your treatment.

Before I get to far ahead of myself I want to tell you a bit about myself, my experience with Shy Bladder, why I wrote “Go-Anywhere” and why I think it will help you.

Why I decided to do something about my Shy Bladder.

To ensure no one ever used to find out about my Shy Bladder I used to employ a few tricks.

  • If I went to a bar I made sure there was a “safe” toilet.
  • If I went to a football match or a show I made sure I went during the performance, so I knew the toilets would be empty.
  • If I was going on a long car journey with other people I never drank any fluids and if I desperately needed to go I pretended I needed a number 2.
  • Almost every second I was out of my house I was planning where I was going to have my next pee.

My cover was brilliant; nobody suspected a thing not even my girlfriend of five years. All this planning and hiding and covering up had become second nature to me. I was actually convincing myself that this behavior was normal.

But you can’t keep fooling yourself, deep down I was desperately unhappy but I felt helpless. There was nowhere to go and definitely nobody I wanted to talk to. Then my girlfriend and I started talking about the future and marriage, kids etc. Then it dawned on me, what if I had kids and they suffered with Shy Bladder because they learnt it from me.

I may be comfortable living a lie, but do I really want to put my kids through that. I decided I had put it off long enough, so I needed to act. The first thing to do was to examine my fist Shy Bladder experience.

My First Shy Bladder Experience.

I would say that my story would be fairly typical. My first Shy Bladder experience happened at a school sports day. It also happened to coincide with the school's old boy’s day. So the school was incredibly busy. This meant that the there weren’t enough restrooms; so any time you needed to use the toilet you had to queue. The strange thing was I had already used the busy restrooms a couple of times that day. So I was not concerned in the slightest with using busy restrooms.

However on this particular occasion I waited patiently in the queue and as my turn came I casually stepped up to the crowded urinal. I was just about to “go”, when one of the old boys who was standing directly behind he, bellowed “come on you lot we don’t have all day”. I don’t think there was any malice intended but I was shocked by the whole experience, but instead of giving myself a chance to settle I started to panic. After what seemed an age, although realistically it must have only been a few seconds, I gave up trying and fled the restroom.

I was 14 at the time, in the grips of puberty and general teenage angst, I believed that every move I made was been judged by others. This was an example of a spectacular failure in the presence of a number of strangers, the shame was almost unbearable.

I was convinced I had made a total fool of myself in front of a room full of strangers and I never wanted to be in that position again. I started to avoid urinals and very soon Shy Bladder had taken control of my life.

After examining my first Shy Bladder experience the first thing I wanted to know was this. What exactly prevents you from urinating.

What actually stops you urinating?

Its common name is the “fight or flight” response. It springs into action whenever you’re brain believes you are in danger and triggers a variety of symptoms. In my book I go into more detail about “fight or flight” in fact I have a whole section devoted to fear and fear responses, but for now here is a basic overview of what happens when “fight or flight” is engaged.

  • Increased heart rate
  • Heavier breathing
  • Food digestion is stopped
  • Muscles become oxygenated
  • Involuntary muscles that control urine flow are closed

In a nutshell you can’t urinate because your mind believes you are in danger. The next thing I wanted to know was this. How did that one experience make my mind think that all public toilets are dangerous? The answer wasn’t in any book it came from an old school friend.

Mark’s Story

After my first shy bladder experience I soon found out that there were other boys in my year who had suffered similar experiences, except it didn’t seem to bother them as much.

I remember this one boy, Mark, who couldn’t go while at the urinal and a few of the boys made jokes at his expense. After a few moments he left the toilet without urinating. Part of me felt sorry for him, but part of me was glad because finally I had proof that I wasn’t alone. However a few days later I saw Mark at the urinals again, I thought he must be a sucker for punishment, but even with a few boys making jokes at his expense, he was still able to urinate.

I remember standing there totally in awe of Mark for managing to do that. Although at the same time it made me feel worse because it made me feel like more of a failure. I did try a few times to confront my fears and use a busy urinal but all of them were spectacular failures. That just made me feel worse, eventually I just resigned myself to the fact that I couldn’t use urinals.

Why didn’t Mark’s brain initiate a fight or flight response and mine did? A few weeks later I found out his secret. After his embarrassing Shy Bladder experience he left the bathroom, waited ten minutes, then went back to the urinal and proceeded to urinate. Whether he knew it or not his swift action meant he doesn’t suffer from shy bladder.

It’s like that old saying, when you fall off a horse the first thing you must do is get back on. People who suffer from Shy Bladder left it to long before getting back on the horse. So my mind didn’t start associating toilets and danger; I did. By avoiding using public toilets I was subconsciously telling my mind that toilets are dangerous places. In my book there is a whole section dealing with avoidance and how to identify it.

In hind sight if I had left the toilets and gone back a few minutes later chances are I would never have developed Shy Bladder, but that didn’t happen so now I needed to know how to “get back on the horse” after all these years.

Treating Shy Bladder

Once again I did some more research and found out something I didn’t like. To convince your mind that there is no danger you have to place yourself in the position you fear and eventually your mind will realize that you are not in danger. To do that you need to be relaxed while in that stressful situation.

So how do you learn to relax in a public toilet when the very thought of it sends your anxiety levels skyrocketing. Well the first thing you need to do is understand the Shy Bladder puzzle. You can’t urinate because you feel anxious and your body engages its fight or flight response which shuts down all urinary functions. You are anxious because you fear the consequences of not being able to urinate, people watching, laughing etc. So the fear of not being able to urinate causes us not to urinate. One of the best techniques to combat fear comes from the field of NLP; It's called anchoring. Why not download your FREE anchoring session now.

By understanding the Shy Bladder puzzle you now know what you need to do to solve it.

  • Firstly: You need to get a healthy perspective of the consequences of not being able to urinate. In other words you need to try and realize that not being able to urinate is not as terrible as you may presently think.

  • Secondly: You need to learn how to be confident and relaxed when you need to be. I say “learn” because being able to change your state of mind is a skill that can be taught, and I’ll show you how.

Learning the right skills to treat Shy Bladder

You now know what skills you need. Those skills come from three fields which are covered extensively in my book.

  • Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Hypnotherapy

A word of caution

Be wary of anyone who claims to be able to treat your Shy Bladder using just one of these disciplines. These three disciplines work well as part of a multi dimensional approach that includes a gradual exposure program. To find out more on NLP, CBT and Hypnotherapy simply click the headings on the main menu.

How will NLP, CBT and Hypnotherapy help you?

CBT

CBT has become extremely popular over the past few years as a therapeutic tool. Using CBT you will discover a number of things:

  • Learn to constantly challenge yourself
  • Analyse your thoughts
  • Learn how to replace negative thoughts with more productive ones
  • Show you how thoughts are linked to feelings which in turn influence behaviour.
  • Improve your thoughts, feel better about yourself and then act in a more positive way.
  • Learn how to deal with setbacks
  • Keep yourself motivated

NLP

NLP and CBT have some similarities, but in my book I have used the strongest areas in each field. Using NLP you will achieve a number of things including:

  • Identify your strengths and weaknesses
  • Identify what you do well and how you do it, so you can use those skills in areas where you don’t perform as well as you should.
  • Learn how to change your state of mind to suit the situation
  • Learn to be confident and calm when you want too
  • Empower yourself to confront Shy Bladder

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is probably the most controversial of the three. Some people think hypnotherapy is wonderful others think it’s useless. I see hypnotherapy as a tool; it is only as effective as you want it to be.

I found hypnotherapy very helpful and if nothing else it’s extremely relaxing. If you decide to buy my book you will receive a free hypnotherapy download. Listening to this download will do a number of things for you including:

  • Help you change the way you remember past experiences good or bad.
  • Help you think more productively
  • Change the way you feel about public toilets
  • Change the way you feel about yourself as someone who suffers from Shy Bladder

Start a Gradual Exposure Program

All those techniques and skills are incredibly important, but sooner or later you are going to have to test those skills and start a gradual exposure program.

In other words to get “back on the horse”, you need to try and pee in places that were previously off limits. However even with all those new skills, facing your fears entering a public toilet to urinate will still be very daunting.

That is why it is called a “gradual” exposure program. Starting at a “safe” toilet, you slowly move to a slightly more challenging one. Once you are comfortable you can move on. The eventual goal is to be able to urinate in your most challenging situation, but remember don’t rush yourself or you may suffer setbacks.

In my book, “Go-Anywhere”, I will provide you with a gradual exposure program; as well as tips on how to keep motivated and how to deal with setbacks.

Why you should make the effort to treat Shy bladder.

You may be thinking that this all seems like a lot of hard work. That is why in my book I have broken your whole therapy down into manageable chunks. The course is broken down into 20 minute exercises. You can do them daily or every other day depending how quickly you want to be treated.

After some hard work and an enormous amount of research, I slowly, step by step began to take back control of my life. Using the skills and techniques I had learnt from NLP and CBT; I started to monitor my thoughts and actions; I focused on taking a more productive perspective of every situation. When I felt like I was ready I initiated an exposure program. Slowly by surely I progressed to more challenging environments until, three months later I was able to urinate at a urinal with someone else there.

It wasn’t for another month or so until I felt confident enough to use any urinal any time. I had some slip ups now and again but instead of seeing it as a failure I saw it as an opportunity to refine my strategy to see what wasn’t working. I was actually very surprised at how far I had come in such a short space of time. I still can’t believe I waited so long to do something about it.

The best way to find motivation to start a new challenge is to find some compelling reasons. While I was doing my research into Shy Bladder I found a lot of compelling reasons and a few of them definitely kicked me into action

How does Shy Bladder really affect you?

Psychological problems

Symptoms of suffering from Shy Bladder may include the following:

  • Lack of confidence
  • Self loathing
  • Heightened social anxiety
  • Feeling inadequate
  • Feeling Frustrated
  • Feeling Hopeless
  • Feeling Confused
  • Stop challenging yourself

Physical Problems

  • Activities severely restricted
  • Stop taking on fluids to reduce the amount of times you need to urinate. This leads to further problems associated with mild de-hydration; for example concentration is affected, energy levels are reduced, organs stop functioning effectively and the body is unable to cool itself.
  • Hold your urine as long as you can until you get to a safe toilet. This also has severe consequences; for example holding your urine stretches your bladder meaning it never really empties itself properly; it may also lead to urinary tract infections which in turn could lead to the formation of kidney stones.
  • Urine needs to voided as soon as possible. The urinary system is extremely sterile and efficient, but in order for it to work properly the waste products need to be emptied as soon as possible. Doing anything to the contrary could result is serious long term problems.

Even if you think that your Shy Bladder is “manageable”, you still need to do something about it because without intervention those psychological and physical problems may spiral out of control.

Long term affects of Shy Bladder

  • Those negative thoughts you have about yourself due to Shy Bladder will soon start to fester and infect other areas of your life.
  • Your life will become dominated by Shy Bladder and very soon you will be reluctant to ever leave your house.
  • A severe lack of fluids over time will cause your skin to age pre-maturely.
  • A bladder that is overstretched regularly may cause incontinence later on in life.

The most important reason for treating Shy Bladder is the mere fact that it can be treated. You are suffering needlessly.

What are my options?

Now not everyone has the same level of suffering as I did. If you think my story is similar to yours then you have medium level of suffering. If you cannot use any toilet outside your house without the use of a catheter then you have a high level of suffering.

Obviously I would like all of you to buy my book, but my main concern is to get your Shy Bladder treated. With that in mind here are a range of options for you.

Workshops and Support groups

Workshops are run by the two Shy Bladder associations (IPA and UKPT). There are also support groups in a number of cities around the world. Another option is to visit one of the many blogs online.

PROS:

  • The workshops are proven to be effective
  • Combine a gradual exposure program with CBT training
  • They are run by people who have also battled with bashful bladder, so you will be in safe experienced hands.
  • Have the support of fellow sufferers
  • If you have a high level of suffering I would recommend visiting a workshop. I say this because although my book will definitely help you; your therapy will take slightly longer than other people and I am worried that without support you may lose heart and slip back further than where you were.

CONS:

  • You need to live relatively close to a venue where the workshops are being held otherwise the travel costs could get expensive.
  • You are going to need to break your silence and tell someone about your Shyl bladder.

Therapist

You could visit a therapist the three most popular fields for treating Shy Bladder syndrome are NLP. CBT and Hypnotherapy.

PROS:

  • Good Success rate when dealing with phobias
  • Your treatment is one to one and strictly confidential
  • Treatment can be adapted to suit your needs
  • To get the most from a therapist, I would recommend using the programs in my book and use the therapist for support. Then the both of you can make small changes to the program to suit your individual needs.

CONS:

·        It may not work. As I explained earlier a multi-dimensional approach is needed to beat Shy Bladder; using a therapist who specialises in one field may not be enough.

  • It’s expensive and if it doesn’t work you won’t get your money back.
  • As Shy Bladder is not well known your therapist may not have previous experience from which to work from meaning your treatment may be trial and error.
